Gethsemane works with appropriate State and Community agencies, in a form of practical partnership, when issues arise in regard to mental wellbeing.

Our Structure

Our house is rented from the office of Ecclesia Housing,  they manage our lease and we are a formal Support Partner of theirs. Each of the residents at Gethsemane Community has a tenancy agreement with Ecclesia Housing which provides maintenance and general care for the house. These agreements assure security of tenancy of the resident and also set out the responsibilities of the tenant. There is also a statement of agreed mutual responsibilities between Gethsemane Community and the residents.
When people with mental illness are homeless or in insecure housing, their illness often does not stabilize. Once securely housed, and with adequate support, they can, if necessary, get a case manager from a mental health team, be stabilized on the best medication and start to develop living skills. If necessary, their finances can be protected by the NSW Trustee and Guardian. In very many cases, there is no family contact. They can start to have a life as we know it. They may work at what used to be called sheltered workshops, can develop hobbies and enjoy leisure activities. They become part of the wider community and make friends.

Gethsemane Community has a full time leader, voluntary at this stage, Sr Myree Harris who was the founder of the community. When she is away there are some other volunteers who will stay overnight and some professionals who can be employed overnight as the residents need someone to be present. There are some part time staff employed for cooking, cleaning and administration and these are assisted by volunteers with the cooking, shopping and general helping.

Gethsemane Community Inc, ABN: 23 390 424 713 is a Public Benevolent Institution and a registered charity with the Office of Charities within the Department of Gaming and Racing. It has Deductible Gift Recipient status so that all donations over $2 are tax deductible.

It has a constitution as required by these regulations and a Committee of Management with a chair and other formal positions, who are elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Members. It has all finances audited annually and reported appropriately to the Committee and the department of Fair Trading and the Office of Charities.
